Lasik surgery in Manhattan? Patients should have some understanding of the surgery technique before having the procedure by a leading surgeon in New York City.

How does LASIK vision correction work? The cornea focuses light to create an image on the retina, like the lens of a camera focuses light on the film. Refractive errors result if the cornea does not focus the image on the retina. There are three primary types of refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Persons with myopia, or near-sighted, see near objects clearly. Persons with hyperopia, or farsighted, see distant objects clearly. Astigmatism results when the shape of the eye is like a football rather than a basketball. Glasses or contact lenses compensate for the refractive errors.

Refractive surgery, including LASIK laser surgery, changes the focusing power of the eye without glasses. In LASIK surgery, precise and controlled removal of corneal tissue by a special laser reshapes the cornea changing its focusing power and able to improve vision for most people.

LASIK, Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A knife, called a microkeratome, cuts a flap in the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded up. Pulses from the computer-controlled laser vaporize a portion of the cornea and the flap is replaced. After LASIK surgery, most patients find significant vision improvement.
